Whenever this time of the year comes around, our crafty bakers gather together to create the magical masterpieces that are the Dunn’s bakery’s baked goods. All of these devilishly desirable desserts are hand crafted using the finest of local fresh ingredients on site daily.

Our baking wizards create horrifyingly tasty treats. Take our word for it, there’s no tricks or gimmicks, we keep all of our customers in mind to ensure we provide you with scarily satisfying sweet goods.

Choose from anyone of our ghoulish goodies. Whether it is a spookily sweet cauldron or pumpkin shaped cake; made with layers of traumatically tasty moist sponge, buttercream, and Tiptree jam, or a freakishly flavourful gingerbread monster, the choice is all yours.

It’s Chocolate Week!

What else could Dunn’s love more than baked goods and chocolates? A week dedicated to chocolate! Can we really complain? As all chocolate lovers should know, from the 12th – 18th of October is chocolate week, presented by the chocolate show.

What is chocolate week about?

Running for 11 years, Chocolate week celebrates the worlds finest chocolates. During chocolate week hundreds of events are expected to be open for the public to attend. The countries top chocolate companies, chocolatiers, hotels and restaurants celebrate the week by hosting a number of talks, tastings, samplings and demonstrations. A number of new launches, offers and exclusive products are also showcased, along with cocktails and recipes using some of the best chocolate brands from around the world.

Organised by Sylvie Douce and François Jeantet, chocolate week aims to promote independent artisan chocolatiers and chocolate farmers that work alongside chocolate farmers to encourage consumers to pay a fairer price for their chocolates.

This year the Chocolate show London is being held in Olympia National Hall from the 16th – 18th of October 2015, and will be the 3rd London edition with a number of exciting exhibitions and hands-on workshops.

Chocolate Week at Dunn’s Bakery

Dunn’s bakery specialises in freshly baked goods in an assortment of flavours. One of which is chocolate. We use the finest local ingredients to produce our goods, which are all baked daily in store. Why not take a trip to our North London shop and try out some of our chocolate treats?

Here at Dunn’s Bakery in Crouch End, we provide a number of baked goods for our customers. Easter Range

Easter falls in the beautiful spring season, a time where we all anticipate the long bank holiday weekend of relaxation and family time. Dunn’s Bakery like to keep up with traditions, and get involved in all festivities all year round.

In the Easter season, we are well known for our traditional Simnel cakes and Hot Cross buns, both of which are well-known symbols for the Easter story.

Traditionally hot cross buns were only eaten on Good Friday as a reminder of Jesus’ death. During the Elizabethan era, there was a law passed, that the sale of hot cross buns was only allowed for funerals, Christmas and Good Friday. The English were very superstitious during that era during and believed the buns carried magical properties. However, overtime, the symbolisation behind Hot Cross Buns has diminished, meaning (lucky for us) they are now available all year long.

Simnel cakes were previously made for mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday before Lent. But just like the hot cross buns, the tradition changed, and now the Simnel cake is associated with Easter. Simnel cakes were made by girls during the 17th century as gifts to give their mothers. The cake was not just a cake, but it was also a test of the girl’s baking skills, as the mothers would not eat the cake until Easter. Simnel cakes are known to able to be kept a couple of weeks, if made properly.

Dunn’s have no issue with the longevity of our Simnel cakes, as all of our goods are made with the finest local ingredients to satisfy our customers. We have a variety to choose from in our Easter ranges.

Our hot cross buns come in both the normal size and a miniature size, along with our other products such as our Easter cakes all baked to the best quality. We aim to please.


Halloween range

All Hallows Eve, better known as Halloween, is a tradition that dates back to the 17th century. Its name is derived from ‘All Hallows Eve’, the night before All Saints, which was the day given by Pope Gregory III to honour all passed saints and martyrs. However, today we celebrate Halloween with sweets, costumes and trick or treating.

Here at Dunn’s we like to join in with the fun surrounding the horrors of Halloween. We also like to make the whole scaring process easier for our customers with our Halloween ginger bread men and our scary cupcakes. We make the best “trick or treat” goodies to save you the trouble at your Halloween party.


Christmas Ranges

As much as we would love it to be more frequent, the jolly season that is Christmas only comes around once a year, but here at Dunn’s we listen to you all year round so that we can meet your requirements come Christmas. We produce a number of baked goods for the Christmas season, from cakes to mince pies and puddings, all of which are produced with the finest local ingredients and to the highest quality possible.

Speaking of mince pies, have you ever wondered why they are eaten during the Christmas season? Mince pies became a part of the Christmas celebration in the 16th century, back when they were oval shaped to represent the manager that Jesus slept in, and also filled with meat. The pies were filled with three symbolic spices; cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, all of which were presented to Jesus by the Magi at his birth. Our mince pies our filled with flavour, as we only use to finest local ingredients for our products.

When February rolls around, everyone gets into the mood of love and romance. Dunn’s like to help make the season of love that bit more special, with our personalised Valentine’s Day treats to help you say “I love you” to that special person in your life. We produce a range of Valentine’s Day cakes and other baked goods that can make your valentine’s day that bit sweeter for you and your partner (Pun intended).

2015 Harvest Festival

The harvest festival is around the corner, and what better way is there to celebrate, than with freshly baked bread? Here at Dunn’s Bakery in Crouch End we ensure that all the relationships we build are maintained and kept strong. One special relationship that we have kept striving over the years is with our baker, Ron, who specialises in harvest bread.

History behind Dunn’s Bakery relationship with Ron

At 15 years old, Ron began training at Dunn’s Bakery as an apprentice. After learning the art behind baking, an enthusiastic Ron continued to work for many more years alongside the family owned bakery. After years of working and gaining experience from one of North London’s finest bakeries, Ron went on to open his own bakery in the Essex area; which became very successful.

After retiring, Ron returned to London where he joined the Dunn’s Bakery family once again as a part time baker. As we extended our opening days to Sunday also, we were in need of another baker. Luckily for us, Ron came to the rescue, and took on that role. Returning the favour, Ron began to teach the younger members of the Dunn’s family how to bake, one of those baked goods being Harvest bread.

What is the Harvest Festival?

The annual Harvest Festival is a celebration of the food grown in the land. The festival has gone back centuries to the pagan days, and is still being celebrated worldwide, with Christians using it as a time to remember what God has done for them.

Originally, the Harvest Festival was celebrated at the beginning of the harvest season on the 1st August, and was called Lammas, meaning ‘Loaf Mass’. Farmers would make bread loaves from the new wheat crop gathered in their fields, and give them to the local churches. The bread was then used as communion bread during mass to thank God for the harvest. However, after Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic church, this tradition ended, and the Harvest festival as we know it today began.

Traditionally, people bring food from home to the Harvest Festival service, either at church or in school. All the food that is brought in is distributed to those in need. Many schools and churches use the festival as an opportunity to raise money and awareness for developing countries with food shortages.

Just like any other festival or celebration, Dunn’s Bakery enjoy getting involved in the Harvest festival. As all of our baked goods are made from the freshest local ingredients, we couldn’t let the Harvest Festival pass without a celebration.

For this year’s Harvest Festival, our baker Ron, and our younger Dunn’s Bakery family member, Lewis, came together and made bread loaves to celebrate the festival.

Dunn’s Bakery offer a catering service to take away the hassle of having to prepare food for an event or function. We are more than just 5th generation bakers, we are caterers.


There is no need to bombard yourself with the stress of having to prepare dishes to provide for guests at an event of function. Here, at our north London bakery, we are here to help with our catering service. Just like all our baked goods, everything we provide with our catering service is made in our kitchen, daily. All of the ingredients used are the finest and freshest, all from our local suppliers. We provide all of our goods to meet individual requirements, and cater for both corporate events and private parties.

When it comes to party planning, don’t worry about checking off “food” on your to do check list. Our Crouch End bakery produces delicious cakes and savouries, just as tasty as those made at home. Each and every day, we bake a number of fresh goods, such as sausage rolls, quiches, cakes, and, of course, a wide range of freshly made bread.


Not only that, but we also offer sandwich platters in four different choices. These choices include our traditional platters, with egg mayo, ham, cheese, and tuna sandwiches. Our vegetarian platter, with brie, humus, Mediterranean vegetables, egg mayo, dolce latte and mushroom sandwiches. The gourmet plater, with prawns, smoked salmon, chicken, turkey, beef and stilton sandwiches. Along with these sandwich platters, we also have a savoury platter, which includes sausages rolls, cheese straws, filled vol au vents. Finally, if that wasn’t enough to wet your appetite, we also offer a cake platter, with a variety of cakes such as chocolate fudge, fruit, banana and ginger.

All of these goods are also available with our corporate catering package.

Along with these platters and many others, we also provide filled ciabatta rolls, filled bagels, breakfast platters, drinks and kettle chips.

Gluten free

A gluten free diet is one that does not contain any of the protein, gluten, which is included in some grains such as wheat, barley and rye. Where most people who are on a gluten free diet tend to be suffers of celiac disease, which is triggered by the consumption of gluten, others choose to remove it from their diet for a healthier lifestyle.

Over the years we have noticed an increase of gluten free products requested, and just because we care about what our customers want, and aim to keep them happy, we started a new gluten free range. Although at the current stage, the range is rather small, we still provide a selection for our customers to choose from.

The gluten free range at Dunn’s bakery include delectable produce such as apricot muffins. Just like our regular muffins, they are moist and fluffy and filled with flavour, you can barely tell the difference. We also provide gluten free chocolate brownies with hazelnuts for those who love to indulge themselves in the delicious chocolaty flavour. Not only that but we also cater for the simpler things in life, such as bread. Our gluten free bread loaf is surprisingly very light and keeps well.

Wedding cakes play a large part of today’s weddings, but they have always had quite a big role to play in previous years. Whether they are triple tier or single, there all symbolic in one way or another.


Where did the wedding cake come from?

Wedding cakes have customarily been celebrated with a special caked. In the ancient roman times cakes made from wheat or barley were often broken over the brides head by the groom as a symbol of good luck and fortune. After the couple had eaten a couple of the crumbs, the guests would eat the rest for good luck!

Where as in the medieval times, small spiced buns were stacked up as high as possible, and if the newlyweds were able to kiss over the tall stack, it would mean they would have a long married life filled with prosperity.

Wedding cake traditions

The wedding cake traditions may not be the same as those in the medieval or roman times, as they have evolved, but there are a number of different cake traditions people choose to follow on their special days. An example of this is the cake cutting. Just like the first dance or the throwing of the bouquet, this is probably one of the most anticipated parts of a wedding. The cake cutting is said to represent the first activity done as a married couple. Today tiered cakes are usually made for weddings with the top tier made for the bride and groom to keep, the middle tier for guest distribution and the bottom tier for the cake cutting at the reception.

Another well-known cake tradition is the bride and groom feeding each other cake. This follows from the cake cutting, with the newlyweds feeding each other a small bite of the wedding cake. This is meant to symbolise the affection and commitment that the couple promise to show towards each other.



Although this tradition may not be as popular now as the previous two, the tradition of baking charms into the wedding cake was one that used to be widely used. Each charm that was placed into the cake symbolised something different.

We produce contemporary wedding cakes with intricate cake toppers, such as figurines and other edible decorations, including flowers, ribbons and birds. All of our contemporary cake designs are modern and extraordinary.

However, if you prefer a more tradition wedding cake, we also create those. Often being topped with a bride and groom figurine, our classical wedding cakes are often decorated with handmade floral decorations, all ranging in complexity to suit our customer’s desire.
