Wimbledon has begun once more. It is a time we associate with sunshine, sweat, and strawberries and cream. As the weather and competition heat up, so does the excitement and anticipation surrounding who will come out on top as champion.

Wimbledon Strawberries

The Tournament

The oldest tennis tournament in the world is taking place from 29 June to 12 July 2015 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club located in Wimbledon, London.

The 2015 Wimbledon Championships is the 129th edition, making it a tournament full of tradition and prestige. The tournament is being played on grass courts and takes place over a series of 19 courts, including the main show courts known as the Centre Court, No. 1 Court, No. 2 Court and No. 3 Court.

There are singles and doubles events for men and women, which is why it takes place over two weeks. Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova are the defending champions in men’s and women’s singles, but who will win this year is up in the air.

Dunn's Bakery Andy Murray

The Competitors

Playing on the Centre Court at Wimbledon is a dream of every professional tennis player. This year the players include well-known returning names such as Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova. Rafael Nadal was astonishingly knocked out by unknown 100+ ranked player Dustin Brown.

Of course, the competition is intense every year but this year seems especially fierce, making each match a must-see, as you never know what can happen.

The Money

As playing in the tournament is a great honour, so is attending it. If you were thinking of attending this year, you can expect to pay at least £3000 for a seat on the Centre Court at the men’s singles final matches.

The prize money for the players is even more shocking!

The Wimbledon total prize money for 2015 has increased to a whopping £26.75 million and the winner of the singles event alone will walk away with £1,880,000. That should make all of the training worth it.

Dunn's Bakery Wimbledon

The Tradition

Some of the well-known Wimbledon traditions include a strictly white dress code for competitors, Royal patronage (this tournament is in fact the only Grand Slam which is patronised), and the standard affair of strawberries and cream. However, there is more than that to know about Wimbledon.

Being the oldest tennis tournament, played since 1877, it is considered the most prestigious of the four Grand Slams. This is the only tournament that is still played on the original surface-grass that it started with, and unusually there are no sponsored advertisements around its courts.

The Dessert

Tennis does signal summertime, but so do strawberries. In honour of this, we have created something truly delicious.

Dunn's Strawberries and Cream Cupcake

To celebrate the championships and stick with the Wimbledon tradition, bite into a fresh, home-made cream cupcake with Tiptree Strawberry Jam and a juicy strawberry balanced on top. This is not your average strawberries and cream you see around in the summer, it’s so much more.

Light, fluffy, yet full of flavour, this cupcake will have you jumping out of your seats. Come to Dunn’s Bakery based in Crouch End, North London. We have been craft bakers since 1820, so like Wimbledon, tradition is what we’re all about.

Just like Birthday Bear of Care Bear, who wanted everyone to have birthdays filled with cake and cupcakes, we want everyone to enjoy our Dunn’s Bakery cupcakes.

He was a bear who knew a good thing when he ate it – cupcakes are now a huge industry worth around £2 billion globally. However, the market is changing and cupcakes sales have dipped.

We create delicious cupcakes and plan to see our sales continue to rise with our range of handmade goods. Ready to buck the cupcake trend, our north London bakery think there’s plenty of cream to be piped and frosting to be added.

Dunn's Bakery Cupcakes

Where the Cupcake Craze Started

Most of us made fairy cakes as children. These small cakes were baked in cases with the top cut off, the hole filled with butter icing and the slice of cake removed placed back on in the shape of a pair of wings. Fairy cakes are a part of many a child’s birthday party, but their status was elevated to that of a cupcake – and a gourmet one at that – in 200.

It was during an episode of Sex and the City that characters Miranda and Carrie were seen eating cupcakes from a bakery called Magnolia’s. It was an instant food fashion and a baking revolution was born.

With tourist buses travelling to the bakery to taste for themselves the cupcakes that started the trend, shops to specifically sell cupcakes started to appear.

Dunn's Bakery Cupcakes

The Boom of the Cupcake

In 2003, American-based Sprinkles Cupcakes was one of the first stores to open, which only sold one type of cake…the cupcake. The owner became so famous she went on to be a judge on US TV cookery show, Cupcake Wars. More stores opened and each increased the consumer’s desire for these previously small bakery items.

When Crumbs started operating, the company blew competitors out of the water as it opened 34 stores in the US seemingly overnight. However, in 2011, Crumbs’ year on year profits began to decline. Many felt that the quality of baked goods had declined because of the company’s need to mass produce. Thus customers turned to local bakers, just like our Crouch End based bakery where customers can get their daily fix of Red Velvet or fruit-filled cupcakes.

Dunn's Bakery Flavoured Cupcakes

Why Dunn’s Cupcakes Will Outlast the Cupcake Trend

Whilst global market may now be a little stale for the commercial giants, that’s certainly not the case for Dunn’s Bakery. Taking more orders than ever for wedding cupcakes, selling cupcakes online and personalising cupcakes to our customer’s specifications, the bakery team are hard at work everyday creating delicious baked goods that are decorated with care and expertise.

All our high quality ingredients are locally sourced. Our cakes are baked daily on-site, so you know you’re buying a fresh and tasty. With flavours including chocolate, vanilla or lemon, we also cater for parties and corporate events.

Making fantastic tasting baked goods has been the cornerstone of our success and cupcakes are – and will continue to be – an integral part of our range of sweet tasting produce.

Dunn's Bakery Crouch End

We at Dunn’s Bakery have been crafting scrumptious treats for five generations. We’re definitely comfortable with a mixing bowl and some powdered sugar. The excitement we receive from our amazing customers and local Crouch End community continue to drive our family business forward.

The story of Dunn’s Bakery is extremely important to the spirit of our establishment here in Crouch End. So, where did it all begin? In 1827, Robert Freeman started the business and now Robert’s great-great grandson, Christopher Freeman, wife Christina and son Lewis continue the baking tradition of Dunn’s. The fancy cakes and yummy treats that are made today do not fall shy of the original indulgence of baking excellence. The eclectic menu has since evolved, but all of the knowledge and techniques have been passed down from generation to generation.

Each treat baked here at Dunn’s Bakery has a story. Not just a story of 2 cups flour and 3 tablespoons vanilla. It’s a story of laughter and the community that surrounds Dunn’s. The Freeman bakers and the entire baking family here at the shop, are not only proud to represent this area, but want to forever be the creators of the sugar coated and cream filled memories of every Crouch End resident.

Dunn's Bakery Crouch End tart

Although we know all you want is another bite of that delicious tart or bun, before you stop in for a treat, we want to thank you. The sweet smells that fill this shop are only half of the delight of running this North London bakery. A variety of craftspeople and trades backgrounds have built up the staff of Dunn’s over the years. However, the most important member of the staff has remained constant since the very start. And that member is you.

Dunn's Bakery Crouch End

Our customers and the community are not only crucial to the running of this bakery, they are the best part of our staff. To our staple of traditional buns and breads, we have added so much to the menu from our gluten free additions to our ever-changing wedding cake designs, but one thing that will never change is the high quality ingredients and care that goes into making our baked goods.

The families that have consistently come back for seconds will always remind us why we enjoy creating delicious treats. We hope your children and their children will always want the extra layer of frosting as well.

The sun is finally starting to shine (sort of), the daffodils are blooming and wedding season is upon us. While many worry about the venue, music and other important aspects of weddings, we here in Crouch End bakery like to think that the most important part of a wedding is the wedding cake. It’s the sweetest part of the day (literally and figuratively) and it’s something that every guest will remember.

Wedding Cake, Dunn's Bakery

Besides being a sweet treat at the reception, wedding cakes were originally used to bring good luck to all in attendance and the newlyweds. However, cakes were not always the centrepiece. Many other baked goods have previously been used, like sweet rolls, breads and even pies.

Wedding desserts even took the place of the tradition of catching the flower bouquet. Instead of catching the bouquet, the woman who found the glass ring that was placed in the middle of the dessert would be the next to marry.

Modern, tiered wedding cakes did not make their first appearance until Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, was married in 1882. At his reception the cake consisted of many layers and white icing, both of which were extremely expensive at the time. The method of stacking iced cake had never before been used, but it is still a popular method today.

Wedding Cake, Dunn's Bakery

Here at Dunn’s Bakery we continue to use this method, as well as more contemporary ones when we make our wedding cakes. From tiered, white traditional wedding cakes to croquembouche to modern fondant creations, we can bake and decorate the wedding cake of your dreams. At our North London bakery, we take pride in using only the finest ingredients, and we make sure that your made-to-order wedding cake is made to your exact specifications. Our bakers and cake decorators can also decorate your wedding cake to your taste, with whatever cake toppers, figurines or edible fondant decorations you would like. All of the baking and decorating is done in-house in order to ensure the absolute best quality.

We have many different types of cakes to choose from, so if you would like a sponge chocolate or fresh cream cake, we can definitely have it prepared for your wedding. However, we are partial to our rich, dark fruit cake because the recipe is a family secret that has been passed down through the Dunn’s Bakery generations.

If you are interested in our wedding cakes, you can find more information here.

And feel free to contact us!
