Would you like to try some deliciously amazing scones in London?

Then Dunn’s Bakery would be a great choice for you!

A scone, a single-serving cake which often lightly sweetened and occasionally glazed, was an important part of cherished English tea tradition.  It differs from a teacake and other sweet buns, which are often made with yeast.  Traditionally, scones are the plain, modern version, which often includes dried fruits or nuts.  There are a few simple etiquettes to follow if you are planning a formal-style tea party. Firstly, slice your scone horizontally into half, after that, spoon a dollop of clotted cream and jam, each onto the edges of your plate, adding just enough for one half of your scone. And finally, take a sip of tea after each bite of the scone. Try different flavours of scones and have a wonderful afternoon tea party.

If you are looking for fresh and unforgettable scones in North London, visit us at Dunn’s Bakery in Crouch End. Robert Freeman, the master baker at Dunn’s Bakery, has continued on his familial bakery, which was founded in 1827.

Scone Dunn's Bakery

We offer a wide range of attractive and freshly baked goods, such as scones, breads, cookies, tarts, brownies, buns and cakes to choose from. And if that isn’t enough, you could enjoy a delicious indulgent snack, such as a chocolate-smothered cookies or choose from a large range of homemade buns and cakes.

The array of tempting delicacies are made with only the finest and freshest ingredients, using Dunn’s unique traditional recipes.  Our wonderful homemade scones come in many varieties, with one of our most famous being the cranberry scone with crystallised sugar.

In February 2012, Dunn’s Bakery was awarded The Bakers Marque set up by Worshipful Company of Bakers, which displays to you, our beloved customers, that we continuously aim to create delicious baked goods from high-quality ingredients.

With our experience and expertise, we also provide premium quality and professional catering services for corporate events and parties. Feel free to contact us if you require a delicious food for your next function. Additionally, you can pre-purchase baked goods on our online bakery store.

Wimbledon has begun once more. It is a time we associate with sunshine, sweat, and strawberries and cream. As the weather and competition heat up, so does the excitement and anticipation surrounding who will come out on top as champion.

Wimbledon Strawberries

The Tournament

The oldest tennis tournament in the world is taking place from 29 June to 12 July 2015 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club located in Wimbledon, London.

The 2015 Wimbledon Championships is the 129th edition, making it a tournament full of tradition and prestige. The tournament is being played on grass courts and takes place over a series of 19 courts, including the main show courts known as the Centre Court, No. 1 Court, No. 2 Court and No. 3 Court.

There are singles and doubles events for men and women, which is why it takes place over two weeks. Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova are the defending champions in men’s and women’s singles, but who will win this year is up in the air.

Dunn's Bakery Andy Murray

The Competitors

Playing on the Centre Court at Wimbledon is a dream of every professional tennis player. This year the players include well-known returning names such as Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova. Rafael Nadal was astonishingly knocked out by unknown 100+ ranked player Dustin Brown.

Of course, the competition is intense every year but this year seems especially fierce, making each match a must-see, as you never know what can happen.

The Money

As playing in the tournament is a great honour, so is attending it. If you were thinking of attending this year, you can expect to pay at least £3000 for a seat on the Centre Court at the men’s singles final matches.

The prize money for the players is even more shocking!

The Wimbledon total prize money for 2015 has increased to a whopping £26.75 million and the winner of the singles event alone will walk away with £1,880,000. That should make all of the training worth it.

Dunn's Bakery Wimbledon

The Tradition

Some of the well-known Wimbledon traditions include a strictly white dress code for competitors, Royal patronage (this tournament is in fact the only Grand Slam which is patronised), and the standard affair of strawberries and cream. However, there is more than that to know about Wimbledon.

Being the oldest tennis tournament, played since 1877, it is considered the most prestigious of the four Grand Slams. This is the only tournament that is still played on the original surface-grass that it started with, and unusually there are no sponsored advertisements around its courts.

The Dessert

Tennis does signal summertime, but so do strawberries. In honour of this, we have created something truly delicious.

Dunn's Strawberries and Cream Cupcake

To celebrate the championships and stick with the Wimbledon tradition, bite into a fresh, home-made cream cupcake with Tiptree Strawberry Jam and a juicy strawberry balanced on top. This is not your average strawberries and cream you see around in the summer, it’s so much more.

Light, fluffy, yet full of flavour, this cupcake will have you jumping out of your seats. Come to Dunn’s Bakery based in Crouch End, North London. We have been craft bakers since 1820, so like Wimbledon, tradition is what we’re all about.

History of the Cookie

We all have heard of Cookie Monster, as a Muppet on the children’s show Sesame Street, the character is known for his big appetite. He will eat anything, but his preferred food is cookies. You could say he is obsessed with them. Cookie Monster was not the first to become obsessed with this classic dessert… in fact the cookie has roots in Persia dating back to the 7th century. After spreading to Spain and throughout Europe, the cookie became an influential part of everyone’s daily lives by the 14th century. It was seen in all levels of society, ranging from royal cuisine to street vendors. Cookies then appeared in America through the Dutch in New Amsterdam in the late 1620’s. The word “cookie” comes from the Dutch word “koekje”. How can you resist this historic, buttery delicacy? The answer: well, you can’t.

What is a Cookie?

Cookies can be made in a wide variety of styles using several different ingredients, for example, sugar, spices, peanut butter, nuts, and dried fruit. They are also classified depending on how they are prepared. They can be dropped, moulded, pressed, refrigerated and rolled. Cookies are usually baked until the desired texture is reached, and some cookies are not baked at all.

The Cookie Traveller

Cookies have been our loyal travel companion for centuries, keeping us company on our journeys and influencing our bakeries along the way. One of the earliest cookies known is the jumble, which is made from nuts, sweetener and water. Water has since been abandoned as a medium for cohesion and instead oil and eggs are now used. The cookie is able to stay fresh for periods of time, so long storage life made it perfect for travelling in the 14th century. The low maintenance treat grew in popularity exponentially, giving it the momentum needed to grow roots on every continent.

Dunn's Bakery Cookies

The Cookie of Today

Today, there is not just one cookie available,  there are a wide variety of cookies in the markets, and they can contain three ingredients like the jumble, or they can include several ingredients. The butter cookie is simple and is made with only butter , sugar and flour. This modern cookie style was not common until the 18th century. The chocolate chip cookie is a drop cookie filled with chocolate chips. The biscotti is a finger shaped cookie that is crunchy and pairs well with a cup of coffee. Biscuit is the British word for cookie, meaning “twice baked” in Latin. Each cookie has a unique story and each country has its own word for the “cookie”, but each country certainly knows what it is.

Dunn’s Cookies

A cookie is defined as a thin, sweet, small cake, but Dunn’s Bakery prepares home-made cookies that are so much more than that, making them stand out from the rest… they are revolutionary, just like the jumble. The buttery treat is available in a mouth-watering four varieties, making it impossible to stop at just one.

The White Chocolate and Cherry cookie is made with red glacé cherries and real fair-trade white chocolate, lovely and soft with melt in the mouth white chocolate chunks. The chocolate chip cookie is sublime with its real chocolate drops and silky texture. The oat and raisin cookie is both crunchy and soft cookie at the same time, filled with Californian raisins and oats.

Come in store to Dunn’s Bakery and buy your cookies!
